Thimpu, the only world capital without traffic lights, is a regal yet bustling town amid glorious hills and home to the Bhutanese Royal family. This real life Shangri-la comes to life not only in a myriad of historical sights, monasteries and museums, and but also in its maze of streets, fascinating local culture, cuisine and collective obsession with archery.

Visit the Chorten Memorial, the National Library, Thanka Art School, Institute of Traditional Medicine, hand-made paper factory, weekend market, and the Mini Zoo. Take scenic treks; enjoy nature walks and view some of the famous denizens of the Himalayan kingdom.

Gangtey
Days 3-5

One of the most beautiful spots in Bhutan, Gangtey surprises the unsuspecting visitor with its wide, flat, and treeless valley after a hard climb through dense forests. This impression of vast space is an extremely rare experience in this region where most of the valleys are tightly enclosed.

Trek to the beautiful Phobjikha valley (3,000m). Visit Gangtey Goenpa monastery and Black Mountain National Park, go fishing, take pony rides/treks and feed monks-in-training at the Gangtey Shedra.

Trongsa
Days 5-6

Like almost all towns in the Kingdom, an ancestral home belonging to Bhutan's royal family dominates the entire Trongsa horizon, dwarfing the surrounding buildings with its Dzong style architecture. Trongsa welcomes travelers with its fragile environs and culture.

Visit Trongsa Dzong, a once impenetrable fortress and labyrinth of temples; explore Ta Dzong, a five story watch tower turned museum and Chendbji Chorten. Shop for textiles treasures like hand-dyed wool and traditional machine woven carpets.

Bumthang
Days 6-8

Comprising four smaller valleys, Bumthang has an individuality that charms visitors and separates it from other regions. This deeply spiritual region is shrouded in religious myths and legends, housing some of the oldest Buddhist temples.

Visit the local market and Buddhist temples and monasteries such as the Tamshing Lhakhang and Jambey Lhaqhang temples and Kurje Lhakhang, one of the holiest places in Bhutan. Also planned is a visit to the fortress Jakar Dzong, the administrative center of the region.

Punakha
Days 8-10

An erstwhile capital, Punakha weaves magic by combining splendid views of the distant, heavenly Himalayas at Dorchula Pass with a soothing climate and relaxing ambiance.

Take excursions to Chimi Lhakhang (Divine Madman), Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten and Limbukha -- famous for Bhutan’s medicinal red rice. Enjoy trekking, rafting, kayaking and inner-tubing on Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers.

Paro
Days 10-12

The charming town of Paro is home to Mt.Chumolhari, some of the oldest monasteries and temples, and the country's only airport. Nearby Rinpung Dzong is venue to the 'Paro Tschu' and is one of Bhutan's strongest fortresses.
Tour the Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Drukgyel Dzong amid views of Mt.Chomolhari. Explore Kyichu Lhakhang (one of the oldest sacred shrines), Kila Goemba Convent, Taktshang Lhakhang Monastery, Lhakhang Karpo, Lhakhang Nagpo and Rig Sum Goenpa in Haa valley. Trek into scenic valleys.
