Arrive in Hanoi

The beautiful capital city of Hanoi has served as the seat of government for nearly a thousand years. Situated along the Red Rivers' banks, it offers a distinctly cooler climate than tcities in the south. Exotic ancient monuments, modern skyscrapers and remnants of colonial imperialism all offer visitors a wealth of historical attractions and tourist sights. From big bustling metropolitan areas to the lush green countryside, from shopping at local night markets to seeing artists at work, there is no shortage of things to see and do.
Embark on an exploration of the famous landmarks of Hanoi including: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, Museum of Ethnology, and Ngoc Son Temple. A stroll through Hoan Kem Lake is a must, as is a wander through the charming architecture and relics of the Old Quarter.

Sapa & the Tonkinese Alps

Nestled amidst vistas of incredible beauty high in the Tonkinese Alps, overlooking lofty mountains with pockets of swirling mist in the valleys below, Sapa is an incredibly picturesque market town on the border of China and home to diverse ethnic minorities. The engulfing cyclorama includes cascading rice terraces spilling down the mountains, towering ridge-lines, primitive mud-thatched villages, raging rivers and astounding waterfalls.
Sapa offers some of the best trekking, cycling and motorbike trips to explore this mountainous region and its surrounding villages and markets. Mount Fansipan, the highest peak, is regarded as the kingdom of orchids. Hikers and nature enthusiasts are fascinated by the explosion of colors of hundreds of orchids in all shapes and sizes.
Spend an insightful day visiting a Hill Tribal market; meet colorful ethnic minorities, share in their daily life, partake an afternoon lunch and purchase mementos. Explore Coc Ly/Lung Khau Nhin/Can Can/Muong Khuong or Bac Ha markets.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Gulf of Tonkin's' Halong Bay (Bay of the Descending Dragons), is perhaps one of the most magnificent natural splendors in the Far East. The bay consists of a dense cluster of over 3,000 limestone islands rising spectacularly from the ocean. Several of the islands have grottoes and caves leading to fresh water lakes and amazingly spectacular vistas of stalactites and stalagmites within. The waters are calm and crystal clear affording views of the coral reef, with white sandy beaches. Many islands have acquired their names as a result of the interpretation of their unusual shapes, whereas some islands support floating villages for fishermen.
Halong makes for a picturesque and relaxing beach vacation, especially ideal on a traditional junk.

Drive to Hanoi (4 hrs). Internal Flight to Hue (1 hr)
The ancient Imperial Capital of Hué, lies at the mouth of the Perfume River and is considered the fulcrum of Vietnam's two rice baskets - the Red river delta and the Mekong delta. The city is bisected by the Song Huong, or Perfume River, named after a scented shrub that grows there. Hué makes a good base for exploring the Demilitarized Zone and is an important literary and cultural center.
Enjoy an interesting boat trip through a scenic river and pine forests to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda (Heavenly Lady), 2 Royal Tombs or the Citadel. Later, take a cycle expedition outside of Huè to visit Duong No and stroll along the banks of the river to see the quaint Am Ba Bridge.

Drive to Hoi an (3 hrs)
Pale yellow houses draped in bougainvillea, markets lit with glowing silk lanterns, women in conical hats lifting baskets of slippery fish from their boats... Life in the old town of Hoi An looks like a picture postcard of a Vietnamese country town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An is one of the quietest places in Vietnam. Cars are not allowed on the main streets and, unlike much of the country, motorcycles keep their horns to a minimum. Hoi An also has a lovely beach, perfect for a few days of relaxation, sun and sand.
Go on a full day outdoors trip: enjoying a walk through the 'living museum' of Hoi An with its many interesting sights; taking a scenic boat trip on the Tho Bon River and visiting the village of Cam Chau.

Can Tho / Mekong Delta
Days 13-15
Drive to Danang (1 hr). Internal Flight to Ho Chi Minh (1.5 hrs)
The Mekong Delta is one of the world's most productive rice-growing regions, dominated by the mighty Mekong River. Its many tributaries and drainage channels wend around a vast patchwork of tiny islands bordered by dense mangroves and palms. Its name means ‘Nine Dragons’.
Can Tho is the largest town in the Mekong Delta. Can Tho buzzes with life of all kinds and offers a colorful array of floating markets and riverside hamlets. Moving at a leisurely pace, Can Tho offers a truly unique experience of the Mekong River lifestyle.

Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon
Days 15-17

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), also known as Saigon, is easily the most exciting city in Vietnam. The city has many rivers, arroyos and canals and in spite of its recent tumultuous past, HCMC has many beautiful buildings displaying a characteristic blend of Vietnamese, Chinese and European cultures. On the streets 'cyclo' drivers pass time under vast neon billboards, while the emerging Vietnamese middle class zip past draped in haute couture on their imported motorcycles
